When you book one of the Western Mediterranean cruises you may well find that Barcelona is the port of embarkation. It might be a good idea to spend a few days exploring this beautiful city either before of after cruising.

In order to make the best use of your time there I suggest that you invest in a good map which will show you all the spots that are worthy of a visit by tourists. They know that they will get a lot of passing trade from cruise passengers which makes it the most visited city in Spain by tourists so it will be easy to find one.

You can be fairly sure that the weather in Barcelona will be warm but it can also be wet at times. I suggest that you schedule your trip to see the outdoor sights during the sunny times and the go inside the art galleries and museums when it is wet. Don’t worry though, there is plenty to see whatever the weather.

One piece of architecture that you must visit is the Sagrada Familia which is a very large Roman Catholic church. In fact it is an going project which is not due to be completely finished until 2026. It was designed by Antoni Gaudi who took over the design in 1883. He spent the next 40 years working on it until his death in 1926.

Since that time, the work has stopped and started for various reasons but it is hoped to complete it for the hundredth anniversary of his death. You will find many other examples of Gaudi’s work as you stroll through the Parc Guell.

Another stunning place to visit is the Olympic Stadium which was built to host the Summer Olympics is 1992. From it there are some breathtaking views of the city.

Barcelona began life as a Roman city and ever since those times, because of where it is, it has been a very important place politically and for commerce. That is why the port where you will be sailing from has gained in importance.

Today’s Barcelona is truly a global city not only because of its tourism but it is also very cultural, religious and a great center for international trade.

If you decide that you would like to take in a bit of sunbathing you can do that too. It is not very far to the beautiful sun soaked beaches of the Costa Brava.

You will have a wonderful start to your vacation cruise if you do decide to stay in Barcelona a or a few days first.
